Wildcats Land Nighthawks 6-3

BROOKLINE, Mass.-After two tough conference loses th Wildcats came on strong defeating the Nighthawks 6-3 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.

Newbury jumped out in front, taking the doubles competition, 2-1. Senior Jen Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) and classmate Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.)  held off the Bay Path duo of junior Symone Watson (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Stephanie Morin (Springfield, Mass.) in first singles, 8-3. It was the Nighthawk tandem's sixth doubles victory of the season as Derderian tied her individual career season-high wins in doubles. SeniorJulie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) and partner Sarah Harris (Easton, Conn.) took second doubles by the same, 8-3, score.

Freshman duo Brittany Walsh (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Taylor Wood (Castleton, N.Y) coming back after their first loss of the season yesterday; came on strong today shutting down the Nighthawk duo 8-0 in the Wildcats lone doubles win at the No.3 spot.

However in the singles portion of the match, the Wildcats were rejuvenated as Watson led the way to the comeback, defeating Harris 6-1, 6-1 in first singles. Derderian took third singles opponent, first year Walsh to 10 games in both the first and second sets but was unable to pull out the upset victory. Walsh, who remains undefeated on the season won 6-4, 6-4,

In fourth singles, MacLeod also took Bay Path junior Teanna Montoya (Edgartown, Mass.) to 10 games in the first set but was unable to hold on for the victory, falling in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow senior Hazel Gammad(Needham, Mass.) also played solid in singles before falling to Wildcat first year Wood, 6-1, 6-1.

Newbury falls to 4-8 on the season and 2-5 in conference action while Bay Path improves to 10-4 and 5-3 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the courts tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Weston, Mass. for a 5:00 p.m. tilt against the Pride, while the Wildcats host Lesley in a conference bout tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
