Wildcats Suffer 6-3 Loss to Nighthawks in Final Regular Season Match

LONGMEADOW, Mass.- Freshman duo Brittany Walsh (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Taylor Wood (Castleton, N.Y) took the only doubles match at the No.3 spot defeating senior Hazel Gammad(Needham, Mass.) and junior Hannah Weiner (Barrington, R.I.). Both No.1 doubles and No.2 doubles were won by the Nighthawks of Newbury College(6-9, 4-6) who took the advantage in doubles and never looked back winning 5-4 the final regular season match for Bay Path (11-5, 6-4). The Wildcats head into tournament play as the # 3seed travelling to #2 Becker College while #4 Newbury finishes with the final spot and will travel to #1 Regis College on Wednesday, October 17th. More 2012 NECC Women's Tennis Championship information will be released with the brackets.

 

In singles action senior Jen Swafford (Merrimack, N.H.) defeated Bay Path's sophomore Symone Watson (Hamden, Conn.) after a tie-break match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the No. 2 singles action sophomore Stephanie Morin (Springfield, Mass.) defeated the Nighthawks' junior Sarah Harris (Easton, Conn.) 6-4, 6-0.

 

A huge upset came in the No. 3 singles with Senior Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, N.Y.) defeating previously unbeaten freshman Walsh in a lengthy tie-break match with Walsh taking the first set 6-4, MacLeod won the second set 7-6 (7-3), and she also managed to take the third  6-3.

 

In the No.4 action senior Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) defeated host junior Teanna Montoya (Edgartown, Mass.) 6-4, 6-2, while Wood took Gammad 6-3, 6-4. Wood would be the only Wildcat to win both on the day.
