Bay Path Finishes Second in 2012 NECC Women's Tennis Championships

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's tennis team captured its first ever New England Collegiate Conferencewomen's tennis Championship with a 5-4 win over Bay Path College on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass.

The Pride's Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, Ga.) was named the NECC Tournament MVP.  The Pride wrap up their fall season at 13-1, while Bay Path finishes the fall at 12-6.

Regis was able to grab a 2-1 lead following doubles play as Wehr and Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) made quick work of Symone Watson (Hamden, Conn.) and Stephanie Morin (Springfield, Mass.) with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Bay Path's No. 3 tandem of Taylor Wood (Castleton, N.Y.) and Brittany Walsh (North Smithfield, R.I.) answered with the Wildcats' firstpoint of the day with an 8-2 win over Kendall Kolb (Plymouth, Mass.) and Melinda Mara (Pelham, N.H.).

The Pride's Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) and Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, Mass.) grabbed the final crucial doubles pointwith an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Teanna Montoya (Edgartown, Mass.) and Abigail Janneke (Waterbury, Conn.).

Bay Path took a short-lived 3-2 lead following the first two singles matches to be completed as Britanny Walsh defeatedKendall Kolb at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Taylor Wood defeated Caroline Roche, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5 singles. Regis' firstsingles win of the day came at the No. 2 spot as Jazz Hicks defeated Stephanie Morin, 6-4, 6-2 to knot the match at three.

Melinda Mara gave Regis a 4-3 lead with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Abigail Janneke at No. 6 singles. The Pride's Abigail Wehrneeded a second-set tie-break to defeat Symone Watson, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 singles, which turned out to be the decidingpoint in the match and clinched the Pride's first NECC Championship.

In the final match of the day, Bay Path's Teanna Montoya defeated Jewel Medeiros in a marathon three-set match, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.

Joining Tournament MVP Abigail Wehr on the All-Tournament Singles Team was her doubles partner Jazz Hicks. Bay Path's Teanna Montoya and Taylor Wood as well as Becker's Nicole Connolly and Julie MacLeod rounded out the All-Tournament Singles Team.

Hicks and Wehr were also selected to the All-Tournament Doubles team, as well as the Pride's Caroline Roche and Jewel Medeiros. Bay Path's Taylor Wood and Brittany Walsh were also selected.
